New Delhi: The opposition congress and Trinamool Congress have attacked the government, accusing the progress of the delay in evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine, which staggered under Russian attacks. While Rahul Gandhi Congress accused the government “did not take effective steps” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi “lost in action”, Yashwant Congress Trinamool Sinha showed that India had succeeded in doing far greater evacuation exercises during the Gulf War in 1990.
Attention that the estimated number of students stranded in Ukraine is only around 18,000, Mr. Sinha – a foreign minister in the vajpayee Bihari government – said it was “not a very large amount compared to airlifts India had been carried out in the past”.
India, he showed, has evacuated 1,70,000 people from Kuwait between August and October 1990. All efforts, he showed, supervised by IK Gujral, a former prime minister, who was the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time.
“Even though the election still happens, it will be the height of the tragedy to use this opportunity to disseminate that the Indian government has done a fantastic job … PM talking about this in the demonstration above is not too good. It is the government’s duty to do this,” Add it.
The government, said Sinha, “knows the crisis will come” and should take a timely step to bring those who want to return “when the airspace in Ukraine is open”.
“Even after the airspace is closed, our embassy in Ukraine should make arrangements so that students go by bus or any transportation available as soon as possible to neighboring countries,” he added.
The government, said Sinha, should have been prepared with an emergency plan “. Even though it has now sent four ministers to countries bordering Ukraine, it should be done before, he added.
During the last days, there have been reports of Indian students who face problems on the border of Romania and Poland. The students claimed that many of them were beaten and were not permitted to cross when they reached the border after traveling miles, sometimes it runs coldly.
In videos sent or tweets, they talk about having to go without food and water for more than one day and see friends collapse under pressure. On the border, they said they were made to wait for hours while Ukraine and students from other countries were allowed to cross.
Regarding the benefits of students, Sinha said, “I was told by the sources informed that this was because of the government’s ambivalent attitude towards the crisis adopted … That was the reason why the Ukrainian authority was not too helpful”.
On Monday, Congress Rahul Gandhi tweeted a video that showed an Indian student stranded in Ukraine alleged that the government did nothing to help them. Tweet reading, “Indian conditions stranded in Ukraine worsened. However, the Indonesian government did not take effective steps to take it home. As usual, PM is Mia.”
The Indian Embassy has asked students not to reach the border directly. They must go to West Ukraine “in consultation with the Ministry team and seeking protection in cities”.
While around 8,000 Indians have left Ukraine so far – including 1,396 students who reached India in six evacuation flights – thousands are still stranded in this country.
