The Technical Committee appointed by the Supreme Court to ask about illegal supervision charges using Pegasus software has submitted its interim report to the upper court. A bench led by the Chairman of India Judge N V Ramana will consider petitions who are delayed along with the interim report of February 23.
SC, on October 27, 2021, a technical committee of three members consisting of Dr. Naveen Kumar Chaudhary, Dean of the National Forensic University in Gandhinagar; Dr. Prawaharan P, Professor at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Kerala; And Dr. Ashwin Anil Gumaste, Professor Associate Chair Institute at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay; to do a probe.
It also appointed a former judge Raveendran Judge Raveendran, to oversee his function and two other experts – former IPS officer Alok Joshi and Cyber security expert Dr. Sundeep Oberoi – to help him.
The terms of reference of the committee included:
- Whether Pegasus was used on phones or other devices of citizens of India to access stored data, eavesdrop on conversations, intercept information and/or for any other purposes not explicitly stated?
- Details of the victims and/or persons affected by such a spyware attack.
- What steps/actions have been taken by the Respondent-Union of India after reports were published in the year 2019 about hacking of WhatsApp accounts of Indian citizens, using Pegasus.
- Whether any Pegasus suite of spyware was acquired by the Respondent-Union of India, or any State Government, or any Central or state agency for use against the citizens of India?
- If any governmental agency used Pegasus on citizens, under what law, rule, guideline, protocol was such deployment made?
Mastering a batch of 12 petitions who seek an independent investigation into the alleged use of spyware created by the Israeli company NSO, bench Cji Ramana, Judge Surya Kant and Hima Kohli said that remembering “omnibus and denial are unclear” by the center, “we have no choice but Accept the case of the Prima Facie made by the applicant to check the charges made “.
The center, while “firmly” denied the allegations, said that this problem involved national security questions because it did not want to put details in a public statement. On February 3, the panel was extended, until February 8, the time for people who suspected their cellphones was infected, to contact it.
