LONDON / Berlin: Germany argues whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Seven Summit Group is hosting in June, considering India’s reluctance to condemn Russia to attack Ukraine, according to people who are familiar with this problem.

Germany is set to include Senegal, South Africa and Indonesia as a guest at a meeting in Bavaria, but India is still considered, said people, asking not to be identified to discuss confidential problems. One person said India was on the list compiled before the war in Ukraine began, and the final decision had not been taken.

India is among the more than 50 countries that are abstained from the UN election to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, and have not imposed sanctions on Moscow. This is a significant Russian weapon buyer, which he said needs to prevent his neighbors from China and Pakistan.

Government spokesman Steffen Hebesteit said Berlin would present a list of guest participants immediately after completion.

“Chancellor has repeatedly clarified that he wants to see as many international partners who join sanctions,” Hebesteit said. A foreign ministry spokesman refused to comment.

G-7 leadership

Germany themselves have experienced criticism from the government including Ukraine and Poland because of its sustainable dependence on Russian energy imports. Berlin has moved to reduce the dependence, even though the nation’s company relies heavily on Russian natural gas to power their factories.

Nations G-7 has led in pursuing sanctions against Russia and some have sent weapons to Ukraine. They have tried to involve other countries to condemn President Vladimir Putin and to place boundaries in trade and investment with Russia, including energy. But many governments in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Middle East are still reluctant to do it.
